“Tamashii ~ Experience the heart & spirit of Taiko

TAMASHII perform exciting highly energetic and dynamically choreographed Taiko Drumming pieces from the Hokuriku region of Japan.

The players, whilst maintaining the intensity within a tight rhythmic unison, explode into unique and colourful solos throughout. The combination of uniformity and the individual freedom of expression is what give TAMASHII its strength as a team and power as a Performance Troupe.

This group brings highly visual and powerful performances to festivals, theatres, private functions and promotional events around the country.

‘Tamashii’ means ‘soul’ or ‘spirit’ in Japanese. TAMASHII demonstrate this as an open and honest expression of the ‘here and now’.

The Group have touched the hearts of many audiences, showing that Taiko is not only drumming, but also an emotion that the whole body can experience.

'TaikoDo' literally means 'The Way of Taiko'

Anyone can learn how to play a Taiko (Drum). Also learn the sounds and rhythms which can be played upon a Taiko, but to truly understand and practice the Way of Taiko is another path altogether.
Akin to Martial Arts, TaikoDo is a discipline which requires regular thought, training, respect and awareness. Learning Taiko is similar to learning a new language, but it is not simply a matter of learning the rhythms, where to play on the drum, how to keep in time, how to look good and play well. It is much more than this.

The practice of TaikoDo is about the inter relationship of player with drum, player with player, player with their surroundings, intention and thought which goes into each and every beat, the effort to make every sound a beautiful one, to empathise and synchronise with other players, to create colour, harmony and balance, to maintain awareness of how every thought, intention and action will have an effect on those around - the utilization of all basics to create the perfect moment - each and every moment - The Here and the Now.

The practice of TaikoDo is a part of the practice of Life itself.

Taiko literally means 'big drum' in Japanese, but also refers to the art form itself. It is written as 'Taiko' when used alone but becomes 'Daiko' when it comes after another word e.g.  Shime Daiko and Tamashii Daiko.

However in western speak and communications this does not always happen and many instances over the years Tamashii has been billed as Tamashii Taiko.
